Riley lives with the burden of a crushing guilt. Three years ago, her father's drunken driving killed Josh's mother. Although the guilt isn't hers to bear, Riley shoulders it through her own sense of responsibility. The guilt keeps Riley from telling Josh how she feels about him.
"Today is one of those days where I do feel that hate for them. I hate that they had loved so little and fought so hard. I hate that my dad chose to drown his pain in a bottle, took his anger to the road, killing an innocent woman on her way home from her son’s sports banquet for football. A son that is my best friend and the very person I love with every fiber inside of me, changing our futures forever."
The chapter headings are beautiful. The book also includes a playlist at the end. There are also nice surprises at the end. The bonus chapter from Dean's point of view helps the reader understand Riley's rejected boyfriend. There's also a bonus chapter from Riley's childhood perspective.

She blames herself since her dad had gotten drunk while arguing with her mom before he drove off. Joshua always loved Riley as he sits on the side while for the past two years watch her dating another guy. He thinks she is happy with him so he is does not tell her how much he loves her as the two drift off despite their close bond as they hide their feelings.
Dean Warren is her boyfriend and someone she also grew up with since kindergarten. He is her safety net that she uses to shield her from her feeling with Riley. When Dean tries to make her have sex with him saying he waited so long for her and wants her to be his first which is a lie or else he’ll break up with her. She chooses to break up with him.
As she turns to Joshua and they admit their feelings for each other, things start to turn as misunderstands pop up. Can these two find happiness together and will their love for each other make them stronger together?
We watch as they learn to trust in themselves.
We all look up to our parents for so many things, how to act in public, the difference between right and wrong, how to love and how to forgive. When your parent’s argue and one can’t let go of a past mistake then it tends to cloud your judgment on not only the opposite sex but on love as well. When their actions lead to a fatal mistake it leaves an undeniable mark on our soul, our hearts and on our life. Riley has loved her best friend Josh since forever it seems but she refuses to act on her feelings because of the role her father played years ago in a tragedy that left both families without a person integral to their lives. Josh has loved Riley for just was long but has been patiently waiting for her to realize that they are perfect for each other. Hard to do when she has a steady boyfriend. Dean wants Riley and only her and will do anything to have her in his life even if it means lying to her. When Riley finally breaks from Dean Josh sees it as his chance to finally be with her. Will Riley be able to forgive herself in the part she feels she played in the accident all those years ago? Will Josh be able to break through her preconceived notions that true love does not exist and that anyone she gives her heart to is doomed to break her even more? Will Dean’s obsession with Riley continue to tear these two apart? Will they be able to see through all the lies and manipulations of others to finally be able to find their happiness together? Or by the time they figure it all out will it be too late?
When I read this novel, it was like a walk down memory lane. Oh to be 17 and in love! There is so much tension, so much awkward coming-of-age struggle. You almost forget until you pick up a novel that is written so authentically in the voice of the young Riley and Josh, just how magical first love can be. This is a beautiful story of two teenagers who grew up as neighbors. She would get dressed in her Tinker Bell dress to go play in the dirt with the neighbor boy who would declare himself her protector even through the adolescent years when hormones are raging and tempers can easily flare.
You really feel for both characters as they share the common bond of the death of a parent. A death that is the direct result of Riley's fathers poor decisions.A burden that Riley wears that prevents her from trusting her heart to Josh. Instead, she falls for Dean, who is far less than the boyfriend Riley deserves.
This story will pull at you time and time again as you root for both Riley and Josh. They really are two great people who you just want to see together. Read it. You will be glad you did.
