Immortal City First Edition Scott Speer Books

The story pivots around a portion of humanized angel society that is corrupt with the free will to choose selfish human desires. It begs the question "What does God think?" -- Do these angels communicate with others in heaven -- or hear the call to holiness?

I wasn't sure about a book with fame seeking angels -- that just seems so wrong. But -- 17 year old senior Maddy discovers guardian angel Jackson Godspeed isn't what he seems to be.

John Speer did an amazing job twisting together a tale that turns unexpectedly into the story you always hope for. Masterfully crafted words inspire vivid images of likable characters, memorable scenes and quick paced action. Be warned that it's a misleading superhero fantasy that is not in keeping with church traditions about angels. It is however, a terrific romantic action adventure with a murder mystery that is a must read for YA fantasy lovers who dream of angels on earth.

This twist on a Cinderella romance is set in a re-imagined L.A. It reminds me of the diner girl in "A Cinderella Story" and the alien beings stalking the high school hallways in "I Am Number Four." Passionate scenes are tender and go just far enough for YA readers. A good classroom discussion starter for what is a "save-worthy" person and what should be the consequences in the early scene of vehicular homicide? Ultimately -- How could Maddy live in a corrupt angel society where money is more important than what is right or just? Good food for thought!

Immortal City First Edition Scott Speer Books Reviews

A young girl finds herself falling for a celebrity guardian angel in the middle of a time when someone is killing off angels.

This book has it all. An interesting premise. It's written in a way that's clean and modern, basically easy to read. It also has interesting twists.

And to top it all off, this book has two, well rounded, likable characters. The main female lead feels human. She has insecurities. She has crushes. She isn't perfect but is ok with that most of the time. The main male lead is good looking, a celebrity, and rich, but tries not to have those things define him. He realizes that things, in his perfect world, aren't as perfect as they seem. Together, both characters... well just read the book and you'll see.

The world built in this book is well realized. The author spends an appropriate amount of time explaining the intricacies of the Angel Celebrity thing. The book doesn't go into it too much that you felt like you were reading a history book. Instead it simply allows the characters to live in the world, and adds to the lore when appropriate.

There were occasional things I had problems with though

One, for whatever reason, it feels like a commercial for Blackberrys. The author has almost everyone own one or want one.

Two, there's a part where the "Twilight" (by Stephenie Meyer) stalker boyfriend thing is channeled. The male lead follows the female one to inappropriate places. I don't know why it was necessary to put that in there but... I guess one can argue that because he's a guardian angel and all that, it's in his nature. So it kind of works, but it's still pretty stalker-ish.

Three, America is the center of the world in this universe. Everything significant happens in the US. It may be, that even though we don't see the rest of humanity, that it's like this all over the world. Still it didn't feel that way while I was reading it. I mean, the whole reason that Angels become known to the world is because of an American event.

In the end though, all of these things are basically me nit-picking a great book.

5 stars... Definitely worth the read if you like the Supernatural Romance, Angel focused, sub-genre.
3.5 Stars

For some reason even though I am tired of reading angel books I still pick them up hoping for something new and original and Immortal City did a great job in putting a new spin on angels. I don't think I've ever come across a book in which angels only save you if you can afford to hire them to be your personal guardian angel. They are not this divine and all out good save the world type angels, they are in it for themselves and are the worlds biggest celebrities. And believe me when I tell you Speer's did a fantastic job describing what their red carpet lives are like.

This book could have been 5 stars all the way but there were flaws one being the main character and her indecisiveness with Jackson Godspeed the most famous soon to be guardian angel. One minute she wanted to be with him and the next talked herself out of it because she couldn't imagine a simple human girl and an angel ever working out. It got annoying but once she finally got over it I started to like her more. As for Jackson, he was well fleshed out and some of his actions made him a hundred percent swoon worthy.

Besides the romance between the two there was also a murder mystery going on as well. Someone was killing the angels in a very gruesome manner. I found the murders interesting but not the detective who was investigating it all, which ruined a little of it for me since at times I just wanted to skim past it but knew I had to read it if I wanted to know what was going on with the angel killings. I do give it up to Speers I really was in the dark until the end when it came to who the murderer was, I didn't see that one coming at all. But what I did see coming a mile away was Maddy and her big revelation at the end.

Even though I had the issues that I had with the book somehow it still worked. At the end of it I still came out feeling like I read a book that was worth the read and I didn't waste my time.
