I’ve been a fan of the entire Immortals After Dark series for years. I’ve read them all and couldn’t wait for this one to come out, and maybe I built it up a little too much in my own mind because this one didn’t wow me like many of the others have.
In true Cole fashion, we are introduced to another bad-boy-with-a-heart-of-gold, Thronos, and while I love that formula, I found him both endearing and odd. His stilted dialogue began to grate on my nerves, and his self-righteousness went on entirely too long. His imperfection seemed to lie more with the physical and less with the psychological, so his growth didn’t progress as smoothly for me as many of her other heroes. I liked Lanthe’s free spirit and her modern references, but she too just didn’t completely captivate me as Cole’s heroines normally do.
Their journey through the freaky, Alice in Wonderland of torment was, by far, the most interesting part, but it didn’t last long enough for me. I found many other parts a little trite, and Lanthe’s acceptance by his people seemed much too easy.
All that being said, Cole, as always, doesn’t drive the reader insane with too many interruptions of the main love story, and I must admit I devoured the bulk of the novel in a day.

3.5 Stars! I really enjoy this series. A lot of the books in this series are 5 star books for me. This wasn’t one. First of all, it’s been so long since Demon From The Dark where the cliffhanger is Thronos dragging Lanthe off. I would probably should have gone back and read the books again, but Lanthe and Thronos seemed a lot different than the snippets we had gotten in previous books.. The IAD books are usually strong plot-driven and world building with wonderful characters. While the world building was still good, the plot was mediocre and I had a hard time with the characters.
The plot was predictable and we’ve seen it before. It was filled with the Thronos who was “mated” and couldn’t have any other female and Lanthe running around trying to stay out of danger while going through portals to a lot of different planes.
Characters In the previous books Lanthe was a sorceress looking for love. She doesn’t apologize for who she is and is deeply loyal to her sister. In this book Lanthe has had a ton of lovers but all of them have ended up having just used her (to steal her powers mostly or maybe just for sex). Lanthe wasn’t interested in just sex according to this book but was trying to find love and acceptance (much like she had with Thronos when she was a young girl). Now this is where I had an issue, no problem with her having as many lovers as she wanted but really all of the many, many men she slept with used her. At some point you have to figure you’re probably doing something wrong and you might want to take a look at your actions/choices. To me that didn’t make her appear strong but just someone who would let men use her, which isn’t something to be proud of. In Kiss of a Demon King she came across as more self-conscious about both her powers and her sexuality (after all she can never get a man to stay past one night). However, in this book she brags about what an amazing lover she is. Just didn’t work for me. Then there was the issue of the fact that she is supposed to be a little naïve and very loyal yet when she found out that she had made a huge mistake she refused to even consider that she should apologize.
I had such high hopes for Thronos, Lanthe’s childhood best friend turned enemy. It opened perfectly, an image of Thronos perched on a dead tree with lightening streaking across his scarred face. He appeared everything I wanted him to be, a little bit crazy, uncontrollable, ruthless and a bit of a scoundrel. I wanted him to stay that way. Instead we got a rule-following knight like character. He lived in a colorless world, with little emotion and rules that denied a turbulent relationship. WHY? It made no sense. Not sure why the Vrekener’s world was made to be so white and boring. I guess because it was the opposite of the Sorceri who were a devious and selfish race. (Although I’ll get to that in a minute). The book never explained why they have all those rules, why they’ve never been changed and why they are supposed to deny any strong feelings. Maybe a reason behind it would have made it easier to believe. They hate the Sorceri with a passion and yet they are all about denying any strong feelings.
The Sorceri as a whole This really drove me crazy in the book. They are described as devious and selfish and yet they never really stand up to their long time enemies? Never find a way to reach their home and steal back the powers that have been stolen from them. There’s no vengeance? Why not use their powers to plan a devious attack against the Vrekeners. Instead they come off as weak victims. They never try to find a alliance that can help them attack and defeat the Vrekeners? Instead they steal powers from each other?
The Romance This also disappointed me. I wanted the relationship to grow out of a new friendship or the childhood friendship they once had. Not a need due to a mate bond. Lanthe kept saying how she wanted to be liked for herself and while Thronos obviously liked her, you never really saw that growth or her accepting that he truly liked her because of the mate bond. I really wish there was no mate bond in this story.
You’d think after reading this review that I didn’t like the book, and that isn’t true. I did like it but it could have been so much more. I had such higher expectations for these two characters who stole the show for me in Kiss of the Demon King.
There were some really great scenes, the surprise of Furie and the scene in the land under the sea where Thronos proves he isn’t with Lanthe just because of the mate bond. And of course Nix. I love every scene with Nix, and there were a few in this book.
So bottom line, I’ll be back for the next one…although I may have to go back and re-read the series since the books are pretty far apart and it’s hard to remember everything that has happened.
Kresley Cole always reminds me why I love romance so much. I picked up this one after reading a bunch of fantasy and sci-fi books and needing a romance fix. I can't believe I waited this long to read this book. Usually I read her books right after publication. This book takes place simultaneously with several other stories, as it starts when Lanthe and Thronos are escaping from the Order's Prison.

Thronos, Prince of the Vrekeners, have chased Melanthe for the last five hundred years. She was his destined mate, but their species are eternal enemies, especially since his father beheaded Lanthe's parents when she was a child. Yet, Thronos would not give up. He would have Lanthe no matter what. I loved the change we see in Thronos during the story. He began as a wrathful angel, seeking revenge against Lanthe, who'd done nothing but scorn him during the centuries. However, he changed throughout the story to a loving hero, who adores his mate for who is. I fell in love with Thronos since I could identify with his pain, the fact that he was faulted for something he didn't do. Besides, how can you not love a hero with wings?

Lanthe was a great heroine. She has good reason to run from Thronos. Vrekeners have chased and tried to kill/main her and her sister their entire lives. To Thronos, she came off as promiscuous at first, but I loved that she didn't let Thronos shame her for who she was. She's five centuries old! She should've been able to date and have experiences with other guys. She did not take any of Thronos' slut-shaming comments. However, she did have a vulnerable side, and that mix of strength and vulnerability made her much more interesting.

There was a lot of bickering between Thronos and Lanthe, as you would expect from someone with their backgrounds and enmity. While they discussed their problems, at times it seems that they had to take time to work through their problems. They don't just immediately drop their old agendas or feelings once they have a 10 minutes discussion or something. The romance developed at a good pace, because in reality couples don't get over a problem after just one talk. They have to keep thinking and working through them, and that's exactly what Thronos and Lanthe did. Despite all that misunderstandings between them, the chemistry between Landth and Thronos was through the roof!!! Ms. Cole can write some steamy hot scenes!! Oh my god the two of them together really set the house on fire!!

The book also continued the plot arch of the Accession. It's great to see how all the different factions and different couples in previous books all affect the stories of this one. I was kind of annoyed at Sabine though. While she redeemed herself later, at first she really came off as mean and unsympathetic to her sister's plight. I'm excited to see where the Accession goes in the next book and what else Nix had seen in her plans for the Accession.
