This one is difficult to write. I wanted to love the story... but I really only kinda, sorta, liked it. May contain some spoilers.

I love that it was told from August's point of view. I don't think there's enough of that and I appreciate how well the author managed it here. It can be difficult for us (as women) to speak for a man. But the author did it flawlessly. And I really just loved him altogether. His wit, his attitude, is personality. I connected to him in a way that made me want to go to that coffee shop and have a coffee with him.

Fiona was a bit of a pickle. I wanted to love her. And while I liked her when she was with August, I hated her when she was with her boyfriend. She came across as weak and meek and I can't stand a heroine that does that. I realize that may have been what the author was going for, but for me, it just set my teeth on edge.

I love a story that gives you that sexual tension and builds up to the romance. But this one seemed to take forever and it really had me wanting to skip pages (I didn't, but it was very difficult not to) just to get to the part where our H and h would finally come together. The ending wasn't bad... I just wish that August and Fiona could have happened sooner in the book and that we could have read more about them together.

Would I recommend? Yes
Will I read it again? Eh... depends on my mood. But I won't hold my breath.

Ink Lies SL Jennings 9781523840083 Books Reviews

Man, SL Jennings has done it again. It seems as if she reinvents herself with each book she publishes. And no matter what she writes, I end up loving it.

Ink and Lies was so different from anything I've ever read. The writing itself was exemplary, and almost poetic. She had me swooning and nodding my head in agreement to quotes that had nothing to do with romance. I fell hard for these characters, but fell even harder for her words.

"Reading is nurturing of the mind…a cleansing of the soul. It opens our eyes to unseen beauty, and our hearts to the untouched pieces of ourselves that we’ve hidden away from the world. A man without words is a man who has no real awareness of anything or anyone outside of himself."

It's no secret that SL writes the best male POVs, so I was excited that this one is almost all from August's perspective. But what I didn't see coming was how REAL this book would be. This is not your typical romance novel. There is no insta love, marathon sex, and riding off into the sunset together. It's messy. It's raw. And it's honest.

It's also HILARIOUS. There were a handful of *spit my drink out*, "what the hell did I just read?" moments. The dialogue was natural and flowed well, too. Everything just felt authentic.

5 words to describe August- moody, stubborn, persistent, self-deprecating, and sweet.

5 words to describe Fiona- naive, silly, dreamer, dependable, and loving.

Oh, and that epilogue? No words. I did not see that coming! Bravo, SL Jennings on breathtakingly beautiful story!
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS - Oh man, I hate to write this but this book caused some uneasy feelings for me...and I love the author's writing. It started out strong, August "Rhys" is a writer of romance but only under an alias. He is struggling to find his way as August and will admit that his BBF Fiona for the past ten years is every heroine in his romances, always looking for her big HEA. Rhys & Fi have the most awesome banter! Until they don't & it becomes obvious this is an angsty friends to lovers book. Having said that it isn't your typical friends-with-benefits story and I don't mean that in a good way. Fiona has found her knight in shining armor in hot Aussie plastic surgeon Joshua. Rhys hates Joshua for very good reasons but Fi won't listen & throws ten years of anger at Rhys! All of hilarity at Joshua's actions - AKA Crocodile Dundee who digs poop play - is suddenly gone & the book takes a turn I didn't enjoy. Rhys' eyes have been opened to Fi's attraction & now realizes all of his romance writing has been for her but convincing Fi isn't working out at all, pushing her into Joshua's arms. Rhys' grandfather says it best - Rhys didn't really see Fiona until someone else had eyes for her, that he was sowing his wild oats while Fi waited in the wings. My heart breaks for Rhys & yet it doesn't because here is why I didn't like the book. Reason #1 Rhys didn't make his grand gesture until it was way too late. He decided to drown his sorrows in booze & women. I seriously didn't like that Rhys goes back to his playboy ways. Reason #2 Rhys is having sex with everyone but Fi! The one time they get down & dirty it was more of a funny moment & there were no dirty details & they don't have any romantic interactions again. Rhys is a beautiful writer so the book had so much promise "From the top of her messy bun to the toe of her knee high socks. She was his muse, his soul mate. She was the beauty in his world of heartbreak."
I am going to leave an intentionally short review for Ink and Lies. The story has so much that the layers that unfolded within its pages can't be summed up in a few simple words. This story has to be read. The story has to be felt. This story has to be experienced!

S.L. Jennings wrote one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. But Ink and Lies was so much more than a romantically humorous tale with a patented happily ever after. After a laugh out loud (seriously, there are some HILARIOUS moments in this story!) first half, the deeper and more emotional elements begin to emerge. And boy do they ever emerge! Ink and Lies left me on the edge of my seat with its highs and lows. It was artistically beautiful and sweet, but heartbreaking at the same time. This story is a friends to lovers story unlike any other that you will ever read. I didn't know if I was going or coming toward the end, especially when Jennings blended truth and fiction together so seamlessly that it left me breathless. Ink and Lies left me floored by its eloquent beauty.
